Just about an hour away from New Delhi, far from the hustle bustle of the city, in the midst of nature, was the chance to get away from it all, kicked off with the First Prelude of the Escape Festival – Escape Retreats (Prelude I). This edition was a precursor to the main Escape Festival, which takes place annually at Naukuchiatal and has made a name for itself as a space, which celebrates an alternate culture, as well as being hailed as North India’s foremost ‘family destination festival’. Taking forward the same philosophy as the main festival, the “Escape rd March, 2013 Retreats”, was conceived by Ms Potheads and Seasons Hotel to recreate the laidback ambience of “Escape Festival” and create a weekend of music, fine wines and great food.

Spread across the bustling greens of Seasons Hotel at Tarudhan Valley, “Escape Retreats” featured artistes from various with genres of music. The idea of “Escape Retreats” was to bring weekend retreats to people within the precincts of the city and recreate the overall experience and ambience of the main festival. The “Escape Retreats” offered an entire experience for the family with a special zone for children, as well as some of the finest in food and beverage experiences. Guests were spoilt for choice with International food stalls, a special menu for the little ones, which went to an extended brunch on Sunday morning, 24th March, 2013.

Highlights for 23rd March, 2013 were:

1.Grey Area (Delhi): Plays post-modern retro desi funk Jazz. a whiff of electronica and lots of self indulgence. performances across Saturday evening.

2.Chalo Africa: Plays the ethnic Soucouse and Ndombolo, both of which are Congolese music styles.

3.Traffic Jam: A rock band from the north east.

4.Giuseppe (Parvati Records,Denmark): A veteran of the Goa form of Psychedelic Trance.

5.JJJ (Pink Orange Records, Goa):Resident DJ at pinkOrange Beach Village, Goa. He started with Beach Trance Mission in India.

6.White Wizard (Digital Shiva Records, Japan): One of the foremost components of Psy Trance music from New Delhi.

The highlight of Escape Retreats (Prelude I) was the carefully handpicked musical line-up which leaded through a magical evening under the stars with various genres of music. The first set included some good old classic rock along with some African fusion music and foot pumping Jazz funk music, while the second set was more of Electronica.

The aim was to bring together established and upcoming artistes in a unique space where the music changes across the course of an electric evening. The musical line-up included well known names from Delhi like Grey Area, White Wizard, an electronic act from the city; while there was also an interesting band like Chalo Africa, a band which plays an eclectic rendition of Congolese music styles, western classical music, as well as Salsa Reggae and R & B. The two electronic acts from Goa up the ante and the tempo of the evening. JJJ brings cutting edge no nonsense dance music, while Giuseppe is a pioneer in electronic psychedelic trance. Each cutting edge act took the evening to the next level.

Also part of creating the opportunity for a weekend of relaxation and rejuvenation were additional facilities available as optional parts of the entire package from golf, spa, nature walks, and an activity zone for the children.

In the words of L Tochhawng aka Mama, “Escape is a unique experience which brings together artistes from all over. We have consciously created Escape as a platform where known and unknown artistes share the same stage. The aim is to bring quality music in an ambience where it can be enjoyed at leisure.”

The Escape Retreats (Prelude I) was the part of a regular weekend retreat at Season’s Hotel, Tarudhan Valley, and was also the prelude to the 6th edition of the main Escape Festival, scheduled to take place at Naukuchiatal in 24th, 25th and 26th May, 2013.
