Purchasing a car is usually an exciting experience in any person’s life. It doesn’t matter if you have just finished school and are surprised with a small vehicle to start your college or university years with or if you are a profitable business man trading in your current set of tires for something a bit more lavish, the experience remains enjoyable!

If you are considering investing in a car, there are a variety of things you need to contemplate:

What is your financial budget? Even though we all secretly want to drive very elegant sports vehicles with sunroofs and fancy navigation systems, the simple truth is that the average guy on the street will not necessarily ever have the privilege of owning such a luxury! Be sensible when shopping around for a car – remember that you also need to budget for costs such as gas and insurance coverage, and that the actual monthly installment won’t be the only thing to cope with.

What do you want to use the car for? Students that are just looking for 4 wheels and a steering wheel to get to their classes will usually start with a very basic and inexpensive vehicle, especially if they need to pay for it themselves! A family of four might be a bit inconvenienced in a 2 door sedan, especially if you add a baby with a car seat to the equation. And a business person that spends a lot of time in the road will surely need to buy something a bit more comfy, probably with power-steering and air-con.

Think about your way of life. Are you a city slicker or a farm boy? Do you like to go on excursions to rugged locations or is your concept of an incredible outing a trip to the nearest shoe store? If you often need to move larger goods or simply enjoy going camping outdoors or exploring the unknown, a little sports vehicle would probably not be the best choice. On the other hand, if you only use your motor vehicle to take your puppy to the parlour, a rugged 4×4 or bakkie would be overkill.

Extras are not always a good idea. Lots of people spend ridiculous amounts on proper sound systems for their car. It is important to keep in mind that this does not really increase the value of your car. If you are trying to sell your vehicle, a buyer would not always be interested in spending a lot of money more on your car, just for the fancy sound system. I am not saying that you should not stylize your car to fit your style and likes, but do not anticipate that you will receive as much back as what you invest in the vehicle.

Prior to starting looking for your next car, do a bit of research. Consider whether you need a vehicle with air-con and power-steering, two seats or four, a sedan or a SUV etc. Vehicles cost a lot of money – make sure that you take the vehicle for a proper test drive before you make a final decision.
